Wayne Nader running for Placer County District 5 Supervisor

Mr. Nadar recently announced his candidacy for District 5 Supervisor which district includes Olympic Valley.

The Friends of Olympic Valley recently had the opportunity to ask Mr Nader his position on the Palisades Tahoe Development Plan.  Here is his response…..

Thanks for the opportunity to share my views and position on the proposed Alterra project.

In the eight years that I was on the Placer County Planning Commission (2012-2020) I stood in strong opposition to not only this project, but all large proposed developments in the North Tahoe region, primarily due to the environmental and infrastructure limitations.  As it relates to Alterra (formerly the Squaw Valley project), I spent a significant amount of time visiting with the applicant and those in opposition, in an effort to ferret out fact from fiction on the impacts of the project.  It became abundantly clear that this was going to be a visual blight due to the height and mass of the proposed structure.  It would have had significant negative implications to the natural beauty of the Olympic Valley.

During my time on the planning commission I always highlighted on Tahoe projects the very limited and restrictive access routes of Highways 89, 267, and 28.  These roadways were never designed to handle the excessive traffic (especially on weekends and holidays) that is now plaguing these routes.  There is limited to no opportunity in improving these roads for increased capacity.  This condition not only makes travel through the area extremely challenging, it also adds great risks to those who may be attempting to evacuate during an emergency event, such a wildfire.

During the original approval process I pressed Squaw Valley as to their fire evacuation plans.  They admitted that getting all of the existing residents, as well as any new ones from the new development, out of the Olympic Valley during a major wildfire event would not be possible and that “sheltering in place” would be their alternative plan.  I found that totally unacceptable.

I continue to be adamantly opposed to what is now the Alterra project as proposed.  I would welcome any specific questions that any of your members might have about the project or my views on development in the North Tahoe region.  I plan on being at the Placer County Board of Supervisors meeting next Monday (16th) at the Kings Beach Community Center to voice my concern for the very flawed amendments to the Tahoe Basin Area Plan.

It has only been a few weeks since making a decision to run for the Placer County Supervisor, District 5 seat, so I am still in the process of ramping up my campaign.  My website should be up shortly.  I am certainly open to speaking in person to your group if you would like.  In the meantime, I have attached a brief bio on myself for any in your group that might have an interest.
