Truckee River Day October 20th

The Truckee River Watershed Council will be hosting Truckee River Day on October 20.

Please volunteer for one of these important projects, including one in Squaw Valley. Register at   https://www.truckeeriverwc.org

The Squaw project is part of a multi-phased plan to help restore Squaw Creek and meadow and reduce sediment loading as part of the remedy for the TMDL concern.  We began implementing Phase 1 last year, which included cleaning two large culverts between the Meadows Condos and the stables and directing that flow to relic channels in the north central meadow.

This year, if the weather allows, we will continue that project by extending the berm (that directs that water to the east and further protects golf course infrastructure) as well as fill in trench drains that traverse the meadow (our TR Day project).  These trenches are a legacy impact of the 1960 Olympics parking lot effort that sought to drain the meadow of water.

Additional phases planned for next year will include bank stabilization efforts to reduce sediment loading in the creek and beaver dam analogue structures to reduce incision, trap sediment, and help re-establish connectivity to the meadow.  Stay tuned for a public meeting that will explain our plans in more detail.
