Truckee Springs…great opportunity!!

While the Friends of Olympic Valley main focus is our valley and community itself, we wish to share information about a project of regional interest and certainly of benefit to Squaw/Olympic Valley.  We strongly support this proposed open space land acquisition.

The Truckee Donner Land Trust is in collaboration with the Town of Truckee and other groups/agencies to acquire 26 acres of land along the Truckee River near West River Street.  You might have noticed the sign across the river, “Coming soon, Nothing!”  That’s right, open space forever preserved and a critical link to expanded bike/hike/walk paths.

As Kate Frankfurt, director of philanthropy for TDLT, wrote about benefits to Squaw, she said:

“Truckee Springs has the potential to link so many of our communities, including Olympic Valley, by both dirt and paved trails.

Starting from Olympic Valley, you’ll be able to walk, run or ride along the planned paved path down the Truckee River to this property, linking up with the Truckee River Legacy Trail that will continue west to Donner Lake or east to Glenshire, linking all the neighborhoods in between. That’ll also be a part of the Tahoe Pyramid Trail, getting users off of busy Highway 89.

More adventurous explorers will be able to go up Western States trail to Big Chief Trail to Sawtooth and down onto this property.

From the property itself, you’ll be able to jump in the river or throw in a fishing line, head across a pedestrian bridge into downtown Truckee, or just sit and take a break under a stand of aspen or alder.

Trails will also link to the Martis Valley, Northstar and eventually Kings Beach.

The benefit to Olympic Valley will be clear shortly. Our Village shops such as Alice’s Market will benefit for sure as hot and tired bikers pedal in for the amazing view and a cold juice or sandwich.

The best way to get a sense of how everything will link together through this critical missing link is to go to the website http://www.truckeedonnerlandtrust.org  and watch the fly over video, check out the maps and see all the opportunities.
