National Forest Foundation Seeks Contributions from Area Residents

CONTRIBUTE TO THE

Alpine Meadows and Olympic Valley Fire Protection Project

The United State Forest Service (USFS) plans a fire protection project on 1080 acres on Tahoe National Forest land within Alpine Meadows (AM) and Olympic Valley (OV), as shown in the map below. This project is part of a larger USFS effort to mitigate the risks of fires along the Route 89 corridor, which includes the 6,000-acre Five Creeks Project and the OV northern ridge work funded by the grant awarded to the Olympic Valley Public Service.

While much of the 1080 acres is within Alpine Meadows, the area to be treated does extend into Olympic Valley, and should increase the Valley’s protection from wildfire.

The USFS is partnering with the National Forest Foundation (NFF) to raise money to support the first phase of this project, completing a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis (similar to CEQA for development projects). The cost would be $448,000.

The Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) awarded the NFF $263,000 towards this project. NFF is looking to raise the remaining $185,000, and is asking the members of the two communities to assist by contributing. Contributions to NFF are tax deductible.
