A Closer Look At The New Ikon Pass

As everyone is probably aware, KSL formed a company with Henry Crown and
Co to form Alterra Mountain Company, which now owns 13 ski areas, including
Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows. In the pursuit of winter skiers and vacationers,
Alterra announced the Ikon pass (to compete with the Vail Epic pass) which
gives purchasers access to the Alterra resorts plus a number of additional
marketing partners, such as Alta, Snowbird, Big Sky, and Jackson Hole.
Recently Alterra announced the specifics of the Ikon pass, which will come in
only 2 flavors, the full Ikon pass and the more restricted Ikon base pass. This
compares to the 17 flavors of Epic pass which include several military passes.

What has come as a complete surprise, however, especially to the Squaw/Alpine
(and Mammoth Mountain) locals is the elimination of a pass to just ski your local
mountain AND the elimination of the lower priced senior passes.

As a local resident, Dr. Jon Shanser wrote in this note to Squaw management
“My concern is that with the new Ikon pass, those folks who might wish to only
ski Squaw/Alpine, and not the other resorts included with the Ikon pass,
will be paying considerably more for the new pass for something many will never
use”.

Another local resident, Nancy Shaeffer, wrote….

“Now, at sixty-eight years old, I have enjoyed a senior pass for the last few years.
What a joy it has been to at last ski midweek, meet my senior girlfriends on the
slopes, and contribute to an active healthy lifestyle…I am not interested in skiing
your other twenty-six resorts that you say are included in the IKON PASS. That is
not in my financial picture to travel and stay at other locations, especially when I
live in the perfect spot to enjoy my favorite ski location, Squaw Valley”.

To these expressed concerns, a representative of KSL, Dan Goldstein, wrote
back, “Thank you for contacting us in regards to our new Ikon Pass products. In
an effort to streamline the pass product offerings, the Ikon Pass and Ikon Base
Pass will be offered at the same price for adults of all ages. The Ikon Passes give
guests access to 26 destinations across nine states and four Canadian
provinces, an incredible value for a competitive price. While the advantage of a
senior discount is being discontinued, tremendous additional advantages are
gained with purchase of the Ikon Pass.

As you can imagine, this response did not sit well with many of the long time
patrons of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. It did not address the “local
mountain” question. And, as was pointed out to KSL by Jon Shanser,

The argument about “streamlining” your pass flies in the face of the fact that your
biggest competitor (Vail) shows 17 different passes on their website. Moreover,
Vail offers a senior Tahoe Value pass for $409! It excludes Saturdays (except at
Heavenly) but is unlimited otherwise both at Northstar and Kirkwood (except for
restrictions/blackout over the holiday/peak periods).”

The Friends of Olympic Valley urge KSL to reconsider a local SV/AM pass as well
as a senior option.
